Hotel Tricks

Wildlife One of the most intense realities of staying here is the presence of hippos. It is common for them to emerge from the water after dark and graze on the hotel lawns. These are dangerous, territorial animals. Never walk near the dark corners of the garden or by the water's edge at night. Observe them only from safety on an upper-floor balcony or raised restaurant terrace.

When it comes to the insects, ‘Lake Flies’ are a peculiar phenomenon here. These huge swarms of tiny midges appear like smoke clouds rising from the lake. They are totally harmless but simply annoying and also attracted to light. In the evenings, keep your balcony doors strictly closed and minimize outdoor lighting, or your room will be swarmed.

Lower your dining expectations. The kitchen is slow. Order early while having sundowners so that it may be ready by 7:30 PM, or better still, Whole Tilapia (Wet fry) with Ugali and Sukuma wiki- stick to the strengths; it’s fresh and delicious here. Do not complicate matters with Western dishes of steaks or pasta which are rarely done well. Also, carry cash (Kenya Shillings) as the card machine often struggles with the network signal near the lake.
